Do Americans Really Understand Irony?
Let me begin by saying that I am an American Ok, I have taken. But let me turn to get a little more unpopular by suggesting that our American society presents us with a number of valuable and positive aspects. (No, I was not quite ironic) before you stop reading, let me suggest that we are fighting for what I consider to be the biggest mistake in our modern society. A self-absorbed US-centred attitude? A devastating ill-conceived foreign policy that is destroying our reputation around the world? No, none of them. In my opinion, the greatest tragedy is the serious shortage of irony in our daily lives and conversations. So what is irony? Let me begin by explaining the concept, so that at least my other Americans can understand the idea, even if we do not get it. Merriam Webster Dictionary (http://www.mw.com) offers several definitions, with the lead to a short and precise explanation: the use of words to express something else (and especially) if they are not the literal sense. Therefore, if I travel more, saying: Gee? I coordinated today, it would be an example of irony. The law of the fall was not in conformity with the words verbatim. He used this example, because some of you think May Hang on, but this is not the same as sarcasm? It May, of course, respond by saying Gee-who are not smart today, but I'll take the answer is' no '. Although he gave a definition before the irony, in fact, there are several forms of irony. Unfortunately, to mix and match these concepts? sarcasm is not one of these forms. The problem is that sarcasm is normal , said in an ironic manner, but this is not always the case. In short, it is possible to have either sarcasm or irony, without the other. Back to my first example, where I came across if he had mocked me and said, Gee? which is coordinated in the day, it would be sarcastic because of contempt snigger. But, as you recall May of the above, is also defined as the irony. But if I had misunderstood mocked the incident, saying Gee? not lack of coordination , he will have lost a touch of irony, and only descend to the lowest form of learning? sarcasm. (For a full explanation of the difference between these two concepts see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Irony # Irony_vs_Sarcasm) So, in essence, the irony may be misunderstood as sarcasm, because two concepts do overlap. Sarcasme should be teased or sneering tone, and hence the confusion stems from the fact that it is often ironic sarcasm to make statements that are clearly positive when something negative is intended. To be a source of confusion, I note the possibility that parody and satire both the irony and sarcasm of even more effective. (http://www.modern-masterpieces.com) So, do Americans really do not understand the irony? It seems unlikely because of its close relationship with sarcasm, but still possible. It is true that many English actors find the American circuit more difficult for the same reason. The fact that irony is used for different effects the USA does not mean it was not used for large and surprising. The success in the world shows that The Simpsons and Seinfeld is attributed in part to its incredible use of irony. These programs allow both ironic humour to infiltrate a striking contrast with the more traditional comedy many configurations as American sitcoms, which are much more focused joke. To end this part of self-congratulatory praise for the way we Americans really understand and use irony, I take note of two (America), Golden Globe awarded to English very ironic sitcom The Bureau (http://www.bbc. Co.uk / Comedy / theoffice). What is it you say? The Globes are awarded as the Hollywood foreign press as well, and it is likely that this was a big influence, particularly given the relatively small-scale success with the show to the USA. Ok, I suppose a good comment. But the second, and more worryingly, the Bureau was turned to the U.S. market. Thus, for the first heap praise on this beautiful piece of television and deconstruct, irony-Americanise and repackage. Perfect! I think the whole argument could be lost in this sad single point. But the need, more and more irony is, and will not stop. It has been said that Americans are taken for a serious effort to abandon the irony in conversations everyday. Well, there is no doubt in my mind that things are changing. The lines shows like The Simpsons are copied and used by millions of children in this great country, and slowly but surely, the former gag funny than previous generations give way to the highest form of humour? irony . Well, I think we clarified the issue - not!
